The WÄRTSILÄ® 20 is a four-stroke diesel engine that can be run on marine diesel oil (MDO) or heavy fuel oil (HFO). The engine can switch over from MDO to HFO and vice versa without power interruption at any engine operation load. Wärtsilä 20 has proven its robustness and reliability with over 4000 engines delivered after it was introduced to the market in the early 1990s. Wärtsilä 20 covers the lower power range in the Wärtsilä diesel engine family.
KEY BENEFITS OF THE WÄRTSILÄ 20 ARE:
• Proven and reliable heavy fuel technology
• Easy and cost-effective installation
• Long overhaul intervals
• Low exhaust gas emissions
• Fuel economy over the entire engine operation range
• Minimal consumables thanks to modular design
• Embedded automation system
TYPICAL APPLICATION AREAS
Wärtsilä 20 is suitable for a wide range of applications in various respects. Thanks to modular and compact design the engine can be installed and optimised for constant speed generating sets as well as variable speed for mechanical drive applications for main engines.
Utmost power-to-weight and power-tospace rations of the Wärtsilä 20 offer various machinery opportunities for different vessel applications. The Wärtsilä 20 can be installed as mechanical drive prime mover for smaller applications, like small cargo vessels, ferries or tug boat installations. Wärtsilä 20 is also optimal for genset application for a wide range of vessel types. Flexibility in engine support arrangements allows optimised rigid or flexible foundation for a wide range of application types in marine and land based power solutions.
OPERATION FEATURES
Wärtsilä 20 is able to operate on different fuels from the lowest viscosity of 1.8 cSt up to 730 cSt HFO (at 50 °C). The engine is also able to use low sulphur fuel oils (<0.1% S) set as standard by authorities for fuel oil used in emission controlled areas.
LIFECYCLE COSTS
The fact that the Wärtsilä 20 has originally been designed to operate reliably with the poorest quality heavy fuel, makes the Wärtsilä 20 ultimate in reliable performance using light diesel oils. Overhaul intervals up to 24,000 hours and maintenance-friendly design are some of the main valuable features experienced with more than four thousand Wärtsilä 20 engines installed since the launch in 1992. Thanks to the Variable Inlet Valve Closing system included as standard in the Wärtsilä 20 engine family, the fuel economy has been improved especially at low engine loads.
The Wärtsilä 20 engine is fully compliant with the IMO Tier II exhaust emissions regulations set out in Annex VI of the MARPOL 73/78 convention.
